Small Satellites for Earth Observation - Missions & Technologies, Operational Responsive Space, Commercial Constellations, Published 2014, 374 pages. Hardcover. This book reflects the latest developments in the field of development and application of small satellites for Earth observation. It consists of three parts. Part I, Missions & Technologies, was compiled from contributions given at the 9th International IAA Symposium on Small Satellites for Earth Observation, April 8-12, 2013, Berlin, Germany (IAA – International Academy of Astronautics). From the 15 sessions for oral presentations and two poster sessions, 39 contributions were selected representing new mission concepts and technological challenges. They reflect the potentials of a diversity of new Earth observation missions. The scope goes from NASA’s Earth science missions using small satellites to constellations and formations as well as single satellites developed for and in countries emerging in space. Furthermore, part I covers also a broad range of new technologies and techniques allowing to pursue new application areas for small satellites. Technologies include diverse position and attitude control systems for micro and nano satellites like for instance star trackers, reaction wheels and micro thrusters, as well as deorbiting systems. New techniques enabling new application areas for small satellites include afford able SAR (synthetic aperture radar) systems. Part II, Operational Responsive Space (ORS), introducing the new concept and its components, was specifically written for this book. It incorporates the content of the relevant for ORS papers presented at the 9th IAA Symposium. Part III, Commercial Constellations, also specifically written for this book, shows that the commercialization of small satellite constellations including their data is already under way since the beginning of the new millennium. In our view, commercialization is the final proof that Earth observation/monitoring is serving the real needs of the peoples on Earth, justifying the immense efforts to establish the necessary infrastructure. €80.00 shipping included.
